when someone is pregnant, there are many drugs she is not supposed to take because of the risk of harming a featus. at this time of life its very dangerous to use a over the counter drugs without consulting a doctor.recently many kids have been born with multiple malformations because of this tendency of their mother to take drugs and other chemicals like alcohol without knowing that they may affect the unborn child. today am going to discuss about at least top ten drugs which shouldnt be used by a pregnant woman.
albendazole; this is a drug which is used for management of intestinal worms, this drug is capable of capable of terminating the pregnancy when given during pregnancy so another drug called mebendazole is given as a substitute.
gentamycin; this is an antibiotic belonging to aminogycoside group. its used to treat infections like uurinary tract infections, ear infections, wounds, and etc... but this drug damages the the 8th cranial nerve called auditory nerve which is responsible for hearing and balance.this drug can cause irreversible deafness to a featus.
doxycycline; this is the drug which belongs to tetracycline group, its used to kill bacteria in different types of infections. the drug cause the depression of bones, stain the teeth and sometimes abortion. so alternative drugs are used in case of any infection during pregnancy.all tetracycline are contraindicated this time.
metronidazole; this is an antibiotic which is commonly used to kill anaerobic bacteria and protozoa infections. its also used in treatment of peptic ulcers and pelvic inflamatory diseases. when used during first trimister of pregnancy it causes tetarogenic effect or malformation of featus.other metronidazole derivatives are tinidazole and scenidazole which are contraindicated too.
misoprostol; its a prostaglandin analogue drug which is used mainly in treatment of peptic ulcers. its cant be given to a pregnant woman who has peptic ulcer due to is effect on dilatation of the cervix and termination of pregnancy.
praziquantel; is the drug used to treat schistosomiasis and other intestinal worms, its can cause tetarogenic effects to unborn featus so the alternative ant worms like niclosamide can be used.
non steroidal ant inflamatory drugs; this is the group of drugs which include aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen, meloxicam and peroxicam...these drugs are blood thinners they can cause severe blood loss in in obstretic complications like placent praevia. they have also been implicated to some featal malformation.
furasamide; this is the drug used to treat excessive accumulation of water in extravascular spaces or to treat high blood pressure. its contraindicated to pregnancy because it can cause volume depletion and lower blood pressure to the point of causing shock..
ciproflaxin; this is an antibiotic belong to flouroquinolones group its widely used in treatment of gram negative infections i.e typhoid, urinary tract infections and pelvic infamatory disease. this drug cause cartilage deformity and cause bone malformations.
arthmether lumefantrine; this is ant malaria medication, its cant be used by pregnant women during the first trimister due to tetarogenic effect it can cause. most of the time quinine is prefered as the alternative drug during this time.
conclusion; the drugs above are among few which are contraindicated in pregnancy, there are many other drugs which are still being researched on their impact on pregnant women so the important thing is not to take any drug without a doctor prescription during pregnancy..
